Mit der Entwicklung der Navigation Satellite Timing and Ranging, kurz NAVSTAR, ist der Traum für die genaue Positionierung auf jedem Punkt der Erde, zu jeder Zeit und bei jedem Wetter Wirklichkeit geworden. Welchen unvorstellbaren Nutzen das GPS hat, wird durch die Blitzschlagortung verdeutlicht. Das GPS wird als Uhrzeit- Synchronisierer verwendet, damit alle Blitzdetektoren die genaue Uhrzeit besitzen, womit die Blitze zur einheitlichen Zeit registriert werden. Die Karten wurden immer weiter entwickelt und so wurden bedeutsame Handelsrouten auf dem Land gekennzeichnet. Zumal die Erde eine Kugel ist, erweist es sich als unmöglich, sie auf einem Blatt Papier so darzustellen, dass gleichzeitig Winkel-, Abstands- und Flächenverhältnisse erhalten bleiben.
